What is Grape Seed Extract?
The grape seed extract is a type of proanthocyanidin oligomers (OPCs) processed from the seeds of Vitis vinifera, a phytochemical belonging to the flavonoid family, which has a very potent antioxidant effect. As early as the ancient Roman period, the Romans and Greeks noted the many health benefits of wine consumption. Recent research studies have found that the Mediterranean region has a low incidence of heart disease due to the daily consumption of grapes.
Since the 1980s, grape seed extract and proanthocyanidins have been marketed in France and elsewhere as treatments for vascular disease, and are increasingly expanding into the European and American markets; grape seed extract is used as a food additive to prevent oxidation and to preserve the freshness of foods, and grape seed oil is used in cooking and in the preparation of salad dressings, among other things.
Many studies have concluded that grape seeds are rich in OPCs and have antioxidant effects, which may play a role in cardiovascular, neurological, and cancer prevention. However, more clinical double-blind trials are needed to support this.
