Gynostemma extract is the isolation of more than 50 gynostemma saponins from the plant, which, like ginsenosides, belong to the tetracyclic triterpenoid group of saponins. According to Chinese medicine, gynostemma is bitter and cold in nature and has the function of clearing heat and detoxifying, tonifying Qi, relieving cough and expectorant.
The gynostemma saponins are the same as ginsenosides and belong to the tetracyclic triterpenoid class of saponins, of which gynostemma saponins Ⅲ, Ⅳ, Ⅶ, and Ⅻ are the same as ginsenosides Rb1, Rb3, Rd, and F2 respectively. The pharmacological and clinical decomposition gives ginsenoside K.
