Marigold (Tagetes erectaL) is an annual herb of the genus Marigold in the family Asteraceae. Also known as "phytoalexin", it exists in nature together with zeaxanthin. Lutein and zeaxanthin are the main components of plant pigments in corn, vegetables, fruits, flowers, etc. They are also the main pigments in the macular region of the retina of the human eye.

Lutein and other carotenoids are believed to have antioxidant properties. Antioxidants allow cells to avoid damage caused by free radicals, a damaging by-product of normal metabolism. Free radicals damage cells and genes by robbing other molecules of electrons in the body, a process called oxidation. Lutein fights free radicals as well as vitamin E, which is a powerful antioxidant. Lutein is concentrated in the retina and crystalline lens and protects vision by neutralizing free radicals and increasing pigment density. For damaging bright light, lutein also has a masking effect.
