Advantages
Lutein and other carotenoids are believed to have antioxidant properties. Antioxidants allow cells to avoid damage caused by free radicals, a damaging by-product of normal metabolism. Free radicals damage cells and genes by robbing other molecules of electrons in the body, a process called oxidation. Lutein fights free radicals as well as vitamin E, which is a powerful antioxidant. Lutein is concentrated in the retina and crystalline lens and protects vision by neutralizing free radicals and increasing pigment density. For damaging bright light, lutein also has a masking effect.
