Zeaxanthin (3,3'-dihydroxy-β-carotene), also known as zeaxanthin, molecular formula C40H56O2, molecular weight 568.85 [9], belongs to the isoprenoid group and is an oxygenated carotenoid (Xanthophyll) that is isomeric with lutein (lutein). Most of the zeaxanthin present in nature is an all-trans isomer (AllE-iso-mer).
Zeaxanthin is a new oil-soluble natural pigment widely found in green leafy vegetables, flowers, fruits, goji berries and yellow corn. In nature, it often coexists with lutein, β-carotene and cryptoxanthin to form carotenoid mixtures.

1. Anti-cancer effects
Zeaxanthin, like numerous carotenoids, provides defense against free radicals that cause cell and organ damage in the body. Studies have shown that zeaxanthin is more effective than beta-carotene in inhibiting the auto-oxidation of cellular lipids and preventing cellular damage from oxidation, which is associated with tumor growth, suggesting that zeaxanthin has the ability to reduce the incidence of cancer and enhance immune function.
2. Cardiovascular prevention
Studies have reported a lower risk of cardiovascular disease (Angiocardiopathy) in people with a high daily intake of carotenoids. Researchers have found that zeaxanthin inhibits low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation under in vitro conditions; zeaxanthin significantly reduces the incidence of myocardial infarction and helps slow the process of atherosclerosis.
